This 1-day conference will focus on sharing information on the innovative work underway within organisations to support and empower people to ‘self-guard’ in important areas of their lives, including relationships, finances, use of social media, etc.
- There will be range of presentations from people supported outlining what self-guarding means to them and how they are self-guarding in practice along with initiatives developed to provide preventative, accessible education that strengthens self-guarding while remaining firmly rights-based and person-centred.
- Practical examples of the ‘Making Safeguarding Personal’ Toolkit will be shared highlighting collaborative, strengths-based approaches to self-guarding.
- The event will also include a presentation on research undertaken by the Centre for Disability Law and Policy, University of Galway, on people’s experiences of targeted abuse, including what is often referred to as mate crime, where individuals are exploited or harmed by people who present themselves as friends or trusted members of their community.
- The event will also provide delegates with the opportunity to hear from others working in this area, to network and discuss common issues arising in their work practice.
